How the Compromise Candidate Came About
More behind the scenes details are coming out about how David Hardage became the selection of the TBC/BGCT search committee.
Who?
David Hardage, the person the search committee has picked to oversee the decline of the former BGCT.
Oh…..
It seems the Jerry Carlisle really wanted the job. I mean really, really, really wanted the job, so much that he had folks working (begging) hard to try and help him. However, Jerry was very closely identified with the TBC and the committee had enough sense to not go with such an obvious TBC player.
The other person who was seriously consider was Tom Billings (we had really hope Tom was going to get the job and deliberately did not blog about his being interviewed knowing this would hurt him). Billings was liked by several of the folks on the committee and for a time, it looked like he was going to get the job (one of my sources really did think he had it. Tom was the candidate I thought would be named at the convention- I was wrong). Tom Billings would likely have accepted the position but did not beg for it nor did he seek it. For a time, the position sought him. However since Tom was not actively identified with the TBC, the hard liners were afraid of him.
So, here comes the compromise. Hardage was someone who the TBC insiders trusted because of his relationship with Baylor but one who was not noted for TBC activity. Hardage was the best compromise candidate the committee could get.
When you focus on compromise, compromise is what you will get. I am sure David Hardage will do as good a job as Everett or Wade.
Who?
David Hardage, the next Executive Director of the TBC/BGCT.
Oh.

Note: To my brother in the Valley: Hope you are doing OK. Most folks have no idea just how much good you have accomplished in your service in the Valley. I hope God will heal you and give you many more days of service to the folks you love and care for.
WOW! If what you said is TRUE (and I have ZERO reason to doubt any of it) I am appalled, shocked, and very disappointed that we, as BGCT / TBC churches, merely had to accept the “Compromise Candidate” that no one really wanted …. but merely felt compelled to a accept.
What does that say for the hurting and dying BGCT / TBC? It is a sad day to be a BGCT church member. Look how far we have fallen and sunk in the past 25 years or so? Look how many BGCT employees have been let go or fired or not replaced upon retirement in recent years? Its in the Hundreds!! And now you tell us we cannot even find a leader who will be able rally the troups and churches get the state going and blowing for Christ. It has been my experience in life that when you compromise or go with the leftovers, it does not go very well in the end. I sure hope and pray that is NOT the case with ‘ole D. Hardage. If so, we are in a world of hurt, don’t you agree? I do not know him well, at all, so I only hope he will do a good job in the top-dog’s office in Dallas calling all the shots.
But like you say, it seems that his real job is just to help us hang for a few years and then he can do two things: 1) turn the lights off when he leaves and nothing else is left, and 2) use his years of pastoral experience to help conduct the funeral for the old BGCT. Then, it will be officially over, huh?
And the perhaps we can sell the nice building we have at 333 N. Washington St. in Dallas. But where would the ends go? What do you think?
When it finally comes to selling the physical assets the money will go into a fund to make sure that the remaining bureacrats have a very comfortable retirement with excellent medical benefits.
